Collection consists principally of a notebook, "Time list of contrabands employed by Lieut. Wm. S. Stevens, 3rd Mass. Cav. in charge of reconstruction of Vacherie Military Road," which records the names of 87 slaves requisitioned from their owners between April 18 and May 16, 1864, to repair the military road from Thibodeaux, Lafourche Parish (Louisiana), to the nearby Burnside Plantation, southwest of New Orleans. Stevens also notes the slaves' plantations of origin, the dates when taken and discharged, and the number of days worked. With related orders and instructions.
